The 2017 MTV EMAs: More Fashion Questions Than Statements?

Rita Ora 2017 MTV EMAsRita Ora wore a white bathrobe and towel (plus 7.8 mill of Lorraine Schwartz diamonds), on the red carpet to host the 2017 MTV Europe Music Awards. The lady was making a joke, like she was asked at the last minute to head the 24th year of the UK celebration. As if she just ran out of the bath, Rita managed a robe and towel around herself and ran over. Ora would come to change into a shorter robe, flick off her heels for sneakers as the show progressed. But the singer/actress wasn’t the only celeb sporting a wild wardrobe for the 2017 MTV EMAs.

There was Demi Lovato shirtless under her Styland suit. Kesha wearing a sequined multicolored jacket, pants and cape with pink hair. Jared Leto also in pink; top, lavender jacket, red Gucci sweat pants and big flower in his lapel. French pop star Petite Meller managed a head-to-toe metallic rainbow dress and top hat. Her dress was also open in the front pretty much all the way up her.

Leading with a wonderfully embroidered jacket and the same color pink high-waisted pants, Sofia Reyes took a page from Lovato (though she was wearing a bra at least) to bare her torso under jacket. And James Bay as much revealed his new shorter haircut, as an oversized polka-dot blouse.

UK Rapper Stefflon Don might get the best or worst of the night, depending on your tastes. She wore a red bikini top overflowing with her wonderful self, black pants, knee high red boots, and a black-and-red furry coat.

Wearing an outfit not so wild, but certainly something we can celebrate. “Game of Thrones” Nathalie Emmanuel, wore a black blouse, ankle-length boots and body-hugging latex pants. At least one celeb wore our favorite material.

The 24th Annual MTV EMAs were held at London’s SSE Arena, Wembley last Sunday.

Fashion @ The 2017 VMAs

vma's 2017The possibility of stand-out music performances is only dwarfed by the potential outrageousness of fashion choices on each year’s Video Music Awards. The 2017 VMA’s didn’t disappoint where celebrity couture was concerned. With host Katy Perry leading the way with an array of different outfits and stylings herself (she changed into 9 different outfits), viewers did catch a wide variety of known designers dressing equally known celebs.

There was Demi Lovato in a sheer Zuhair Murad. Her body suit had strategically-placed lace cuts outs and she wore embroidered harem pants to match. Alessandra Ambrosio wore a full Balmain ensemble that included a mini, lace-up pants and what seemed like shoes worked in to the pants. Lorde strutted in a purple-feathered Monique Lhuillier.  Tyler Posey kept his style simple wearing a black T-shirt, black jeans, brown boots and an olive green short-sleeved button-down.

The best dressed for the night? Pink’s family-Carey Hart and daughter Willow Hart-all wore suits. While closest to our latex heart, walking in, Nicki Minaj wore a pink latex bodysuit (which she is now getting lots of flack about). Later on, when stealing the show from Katy Perry she changed up her outfit.

As for host Katy Perry and her nine changes? She walked in wearing a Stephane Rollan’s white dress, and hit the stage for the opening of the show in a nod back to MTV’s spaceman in her own space suit. Couture styles that followed included K.P. in a glittery/gauzy not-all-that-interesting jumpsuit. She also wore a blue sheath dress holding a baby doll. In a nod to her latest release “Swish, Swish” she wiggled into a sequined tiger-striped dress. Then changing up her hair as well as costume, the hostess-with-the-most, next sported a straight blonde wig while wearing a strapless Halpern with a bird print. And paying homage to Game of Thrones, Perry appeared a Daenerys Targaryen, complete with her own dragon (dog).

Perry ended the 2017 VMA’s with a performance “Swish, Swish” wearing a basketball bustier over a white dress…where Nicki M. joined her.

So, Just What Was The 2016 Victoria’s Secret Swim Special?

maxresdefaultWe might just be onto a brand new type of fashion show/broadcast/advertisement/music video creation with The 2016 Victoria’s Secret Swim Special that aired last Wed night. Starring a slew of young beautiful models cavorting in swimsuits, with Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas managing high-spirited musical moments, this hour-long outing from the famous lingerie brand was quite unlike anything yet aired.

Shown on CBS as well as streamed live on the V.S. website (viewers for the past network broadcast of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show were the lowest ever, so streaming seems a logical step) the models here were showing off swimsuit couture from the Victoria’s Secret swimsuit catalogue, on location at St. Barth’s. On the heels of the just released 2016 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue V.S. made their presence felt by featuring famous angels and models alike; Adriana Lima, Candice Swanepoel, Behati Prinsloo and Jack Jagaciak were just some of those featured. At times behind-the-scenes documentary, other times underwater adventuring travelogue-almost all the time music video-this show that cost two million to create was pretty much an amalgamation of every modern film style.

Though there was lots of bare skin to ogle (and we’d expect no less from any Victoria’s Secret show) if one had to pin down exactly what this was all about, one would have to say the Swim Show was a great mini concert for Lavato. She managed three songs during the hour-“Cool For The Summer,” “For You,” and “Confident”-belting them out surrounding by the V.S. cuties. And dressed in a black corset bodysuit, sparkling cape with black suede knee-high boots, her long locks blowing back off her face perfectly in the island breeze, Lavato came across as a full-fledged force of nature, dressed rather cool and kinky.

Will we be seeing shows like this in the future, complete mash-ups of music video, runway, documentaries? Are we pretty much getting all this stuff already in what we’re given from the haute couture world? Will streaming actually cause the end of shows like this to be broadcast on network T.V., and will that lead to even more edgy programming…or in the end see the end of shows like this?

It will be interesting to see what Victoria’s Secret trots out next.
