Wardrobe @ The 71st Cannes Film Festival

Cannes 2018We might all think it is about the movies, but the yearly Cannes seems to really be about who shows up on the red carpet and who they are wearing. This year’s 71st Cannes Film Festival is drawing as much sartorial concern as ever, and the celebrities are not disappointing in their wardrobe choices.

Less we think the ‘Naked Dress’ faze has long past, the ladies who showed, so far, on the French Riveria for movie premiers and parties are certainly still showing lots of themselves. Kendell Jenner, no shirking violet when it comes to exposure, has so far shown off two gowns rating high. She wore a white silk, multi-tiered Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown, with a completely sheer top, and nothing other than Kendell underneath. She also stepped out at the Secret Chopard Party wearing a sheer Alexandre Vauthier mini. Once again she was bare-breasted under the gauzy and glittery fabric that was mostly see-thru.

Also making the see-thru high-lights: Irina Shayk in a red Versace cut at the sides from her torso down her sides, exposing both legs and appearing more like attached panels then one full outfit; Chantel Jeffries in a strappy metallic gown with open front, all the way down her front and then in a sheer white lace dress, again exposing lots of leg and cleavage; Tallia Storm in a Jean-Paul Benielli sheer black gown with a long train, and then in a sheer-er, netted black dress revealing even more of her body.

Some stars are indeed stayed covered up. Diane Kruger made the red carpet wearing a long and elegant purple gown with one of the longest trains yet seen. And Cate Blanchett managed to step out in a black long sleeve top ensemble with a rainbow skirt.

And to think we still have to the end of this week to catch even more moda mysteries!

Color Splashes BET Awards Fashion

BET AwardsFrom Jada Pinkett Smith’s spinning pure gold, to Big Sean’s crimson, there was bright bodacious color everywhere are the BET Awards show over the weekend. Sure, there was plenty of leg showing, lots of bare backs, the usual attempt at the big Instagram-worthy skin reveal (Blac Chyna went very sheer revealing lots of her tats…and so soon after her car crash!). But mainly it was a bright color display, single or mixed, that the stars posed to show on the red carpet walking into the event.

The aforementioned Jada Pinkett Smith was dressed in a Alexandre Vauthier gown. The haute couture here was shiny and bright gold, with a choker (at least it looked like a choker from the front) that draped down the lady’s back almost as a cape. The big slit in the dress showed off copious amounts of beautiful Will Smith’s wife’s leg.

Leslie Jones rocked her own single bright color-emerald green-in her halter ensemble. The white sandals she added really added to the brightness. And as also mentioned, Big Sean wore his own single color, crimson, in a velour suit. His white T-shirt underneath and Gucci sneakers completed his bright wardrobe choices.

Kat Graham decided on dueling black and whites, with some blue, in her Raise & Vanessa. What made her dress especially ‘colorful’ (= interesting) was the figure-eight-like cutouts across her chest, these cutouts bordered in blue.

But for true multi-color options one need look no further than Issa Rae’s rainbow-striped jacket, Destiny’s Child’s LeToya Luckett’s floral gown with poofy sleeves and long train, or Fat Joe in a vintage-and oh-so-bright and colorful-Versace jacket. French Montana also wore a bright graphic-emblazoned coat.

Is the era of the nude dress, sky-high slit and meat dress behind us? Are our stars opting to show themselves off with color and brightness?

Grammy’s Gettin’ Tame

grammys-rihannaMaybe more than any other big star-studded event/award/self-congratulatory T.V. broadcast, The Grammy’s has given us some of the most interesting, even downright shocking fashions. That classic Jennifer Lopez 2000 Grammy’s open turquoise robe, Lady Gaga arriving in an egg, Toni Braxton’s all white barely-there ensemble; there are so many wild fashion moments to name. The question is then, did this year’s Grammy’s (having aired two days ago) match-up in legendary couture?

From Pharrell Williams entering in all white-suit jacket, hat, sneakers and shorts-to Nicki Minaj’s cleavage-baring black Tom Ford with grass-like skirt and Miley Cyrus’s black cut-out Alexandre Vauthier, with Lorraine Schwartz jewels (and there were lots of Lorraine Schwartz to be seen this night) the stars showed themselves through a wide array of well-known designers. But the wardrobe choices this year didn’t feel so controversial, as just mostly fashionable. When one considers Madonna sported a matador Givenchy outfit, Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian West were the two showing the most cleavage and as loud as any color got really was Tom Jones’ metallic blue suit and Rihanna, in a pink Giambattista Valli Haute Couture poof explosion, this years’ Grammy’s looks were few in wild fashion statements.nicki-minaj,-grammys-2015-red-carpet,-elle-uk,-getty__large
The wackiest it all got was Sia covering her forehead and eyes with a big platinum wig (as did her companion Maddie Ziegler)…as if anyone cares anymore about this gimmick? Is it the infiltration of the most radical rap becoming ever more mainstreamed or the Youtubing middling of the music business that has brought forth the taming of the Grammy’s style? Or have our best and brightest finally grown to staid adulthood with the younger set just not giving a damn so much for what they show off? Who knows? But this year of musical best and brightest looked good to be sure, but not so very adventurous.

And as goes fashions seems to go music, no?
